Artishok produces: RAUL KALVO
RAUL KALVO's personal exhibition Aerogram will be open in Hobusepea gallery from November 16 through November 28, 2011. The exhibition is curated by Maarin Mürk.

There is still the modernist progressive spirit and utopian fulfilment of dreams in the idea of reaching the chosen destination in the blink of an eye. It has something magical despite of the fact that low cost airlines have made it possible to reach extremely far distances for most people today. The first feature that one notices with Raul Kalvo's work is aestheticism – the world map has been covered with a subtle network, with its converging rays collecting into one point after which they will diverge again in order to converge somewhere else.
Besides aestheticism, the subtly formed network also consists of enormous amounts of information. Not a single dot nor dash has been added for a visual effect only – all of them denote either an airport or the path of an airplane, both of them including thousands of people. How often do we give a thought to the fact that there can be approximately 10,000 airplanes including some one million people traveling above North America? When flying, we almost never notice any other airplane, the sky seems to be always empty from foreign bodies. All we notice when looking out from the airplane window is either the intriguing shapes of clouds or surprising views to the landscapes below. Our world is limited with the co-passengers who are sipping their drinks during the flight.
Kalvo's exquisite mappings first seem to include somewhat top secret information about (government) files that we should not to have access to. The overview of actual air traffic uncovers a lot of other details – the world waking up; different time zones; biggest populated regions (such as Latin America, Russia, Canada, Africa) - so that we start to perceive the global lines of force and the way the lines have been stitched together. Airplanes as the fastest physical connection between distances visualize the global map while emphasizing its junctions. With the help of the map we can make conclusions about the schedules and daily routines of the global village.
What is all this information for? After 9/11 there is probably not a single aviation project free from guilty issues – this makes us constantly aware of the fact how vulnerable we are. This very idea has been emphasized by Kalvo who is constructing new world maps while showing the speed of spreading of viruses and infections through global air traffic. The bastings of the global world, despite of their aesthetic appearance, are suddenly very dangerous and fragile. Everyone can purchase a radar in order to observe the whole world just like Kalvo has done it, to map the aviation routes etc.
Kalvo not only brings forth the paranoid but also the poetic (aesthetic) and constructive aspects – for instance, the possible use of such information with other means of transportation, such as bus traffic in Tallinn. Current project „Aerogram“ focuses on the possibilities of a dedicated individual to utilize technology and information from virtual networks in his or her best interest, whether the interests be entertaining, political, or driven by the hacker mentality („Let's see what we can get from here / how far we can go“). At this point, it is easy to slip into the idealism of DIY. However, today at grass-roots level initiative there are numerous options in order to get the overview of both visible and invisible movements, to observe the society that keeps observing you, and to use self-initiative in mapping global patterns and identifying big narratives.
Among all kinds of agendas, Kalvo selects a clearly aesthetic-humanistic position this time, while offering possibilities to (visually) enjoy the powerful rhythm of the global pace of life that is hiding the potential to use the information for studying human behaviour and perhaps for making effective changes in it. Implementations of such potential are left to be interpreted outside the gallery.
