ALICE KASK (1976) presents her drawings at the week-long exhibition at Hobusepea gallery, opening on December 14th, 2005.
Both the exhibition and the works are untitled,
what's more - Alice Kask wants no explanatory text to go with the show
for the reason that whatever the gallerist or somebody else comments is
neither important nor accurate. Most probably, Alice might be right at
this point. Because Alice doesn't tell us lies and fibs. She paints and
draws just the way she has to - her works presenting the truth that Alice
is the one who knows.
According to Alice, the most important is the space created in her drawings,
not the images nor the boring stories told by the works.
The drawings presented at the current exhibition show us men at different
age, clinging to the rungs of the ladder of professional career - with
the aim to fill the empty space and justify its existence, no more.
Alice Kask manipulates with the help of the men, those within and without
suits. Men surrounded by nothing, not even the impressive curriculum vitae
nor enviable baggage of experience, and actually whose existence leaves
us pretty much indifferent. Everything and everyone is full of emptiness.
Without or with intention, Alice follows the notion of bravado in her
drawings. This explains well the positions of the hands of the gentlemen
in suits, hanging in a gutless manner, opposed with the bunch of rougher
and more businesslike men with good heart and hands like those belonging
to a Finnish blacksmith.
These guys have their test of strength in No Man's Land - the Finnish
blacksmiths versus men in black.
