PRESS RELEASE

ERIK MATTIJSSEN's (Netherlands)  personal exhibition Sleeping Beauty will be opened in Hobusepea gallery at 5pm on July 27, 2011.

Erik Mattijssen has graduated from Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam; since 1988 he has been working there as a lecturer. Since 2004, Mattijssen have been holding lectures and workshops as a visiting lecturer in various universities in the Netherlands, Ireland, Suriname, Belgium, Japan, Canada, Portugal, USA. In 2007 and 2010, he has been lecturing also in the Estonian Academy of Arts.

In his extremely large-format pastel drawings and assamblages, the artist reflects seemingly everyday environments that carry a special meaning for Mattijssen. Besides daily situations, associated emotions and meanings, he is also deeply intrigued by the objects recorded in those settings. The slightly somber and melancholy drawings mostly include portraits. The way the artist has depicted the selected objects and reflected the sense of care or careless towards them visualizes the habits and preferences of their owner, whether he exists or not.

Exhibition will be open until August 8, 2011.

Exhibition is supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tallinn.
