For the second year, the annual exhibition of the Estonian Artists' Association took place under the aegis of „Spring Exhibition“ - the title that has been used years ago. The call written by Ants Juske in 2011 is still valid today: „Postmodernism may verbally declare pluralism and permit everything; yet, one might still doubt its democratic qualities. A ruthless strife is going on while being disguised by all kinds of labels – otherwise professional artists are unable to assert themselves as they possess no tricks of market economy nor can they find out the trends that curators are currently being interested in. /---/ Instead of serving as a nostalgic recollection of a non-democratic society, current spring exhibition without the curator aims at democratizing today's art life.“
„Spring Exhibition“ was the most visited exhibition of the year 2012 in Tallinn Art Hall, attracting nearly half of the annual flow of visitors. Similary to the last year, the jury worked in two stages. Members of the jury – Elin Kard, Tamara Luuk, Kaarel Eelma, Jaan Elken, Terje Ojaver, Peeter Talvistu and Andres Tolts – selected the works of 93 artists to be presented, that is about a half of the artwork submitted. As predicted, paintings were dominating over other genres of art. However, the title page of the exhibition was represented by the printmaking gallery that was compactly exhibited on a carmine wall, including the works by Silvi Liiva, Evi Tihements, Enno Ootsing, Marje Üksine, Reti Saks, Vello Vinn, Tarrvi Laamann and others. Mare Mikoff, Per William Petersen, Tiiu Kirsipuu, Mari-Liis Tammi, Aili Vahtrapuu, Aleksander Jakovlev and other sculptors have presented their work, mainly sculpture installations, all over the exhibition space.
Kaarel Eelma, the designer of the spring exhibition, has used the long-forgotten design principle that is currently gaining popularity in the art world – the wall spaces that have been covered with contrasting paints are treated as autonomous wholes; the backdrops of the diverse clusters of artwork vary from white to black. The pieces that had been installed to improvised heights according to harmonious rules appeared as private collections lined up above each other.
Among Estonian professional painters, the following artists exhibited their work: Peeter Mudist (1942), Tiit Pääsuke (1941), Jüri Arrak (1936), Lembit Sarapuu (1930), Lola Liivat (1928), Lemming Nagel (1948), Uno Roosvalt (1945), Andres Tolts (1949), Tiiu Pallo-Vaik (1941), Rein Kelpman (1960) and many others. Also, several young painters were represented such as Olivia Parmasto (Tallinn University), Angela Maasalu (Tallinn University and Estonian Academy of Arts), Edgar Tedresaar (Tartu Art College and Tallinn University), Martin Saar (Estonian Academy of Arts and New York Academy of Art), Liis Koger (Tallinn University), Marie Kõljalg (Tallinn University), Jana Soans (Estonian Academy of Arts).
