Mall Parise näitus „Sinise taeva all“

02.05.2025

From Saturday, 3 May 2025, the solo exhibition Under the Blue Sky by painter Mall Paris will be open at Vabaduse Gallery. Instead of an exhibition opening event, a meeting with the artist will take place on 23 May at 17.00.

Under the Blue Sky presents Mall Paris' eponymous, minimalist and conceptual series of paintings created in recent years, which the artist regards in its entirety as a spatial installation. The artist describes the creation of her artworks as follows:

I painted thinking of loved ones. Then a blue, high sky 'appeared'.

– Under a blue sky. We all are under a blue sky.

I think of the Ukrainians, from whom the blue sky was taken....

I would like to add something more, but the result is silence, an unfinished silence....

And so repeatedly.

I’m thinking, maybe I cannot write. The looking leads, creates...

Mall Paris (1954) is born in Tallinn. She graduated from the Painting Department of the Estonian State Art Institute in 1984 and has been exhibiting since 1981. Paris has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Estonia and abroad and has held several solo exhibitions. In 2018 she was awarded the Kristjan Raua Art Prize and in 2020 the Konrad Mäe Art Prize. Paris is a member of the Estonian Artists' Union and the Estonian Painters' Union.

According to art historian Juta Kivimäe, Mall Paris is one of the purest practitioners of abstract and minimalist painting in Estonian art. Paris's painted imagery is close to a geometric approach, but almost always include something else, something undefinable. Her artwork has traces of minimalism and poetical arte povera. Tamara Luuk, curator of the Tallinn Art Hall, has characterised Mall Paris as a quiet and persistent presence, who as a creator is steadfast and uniquely delicate. Paris's work has been led by the serialism of minimalist paintings where repetition of form has simultaneously a maddening effect as well as caresses the viewer's eye with its pulsating multitude of nuances.

The exhibition will remain open until 28 May 2025.

The exhibition is supported by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
The gallery is supported by the Estonian Ministry of Culture, the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, and Liviko Ltd.

Vabaduse Gallery is managed by the Estonian Artists’ Association.
