The largest exhibition in two decades will present works by 142 artists, who have been selected by a jury from more than 300 applications. The jury of the exhibition this year consisted of Elin Kard, Indrek Köster, Tiit Pruuli, Indrek Grigor, Tamara Luuk and Andra Orn. Visitors can purchase their favourite works from the exhibition and also vote for the recipient of the Audience Prize.

The Spring Exhibition offers the joy of recognition. Above all, the display focuses on works by the middle and older generation of artists, but the list of participants also includes younger artists. Tiit Pruuli, a member of the jury, says: “On the one hand, this year’s jury work was boring for a novice art evaluator like me. We each worked remotely on our home computers, so we could not listen to the knowledgeable and exciting discussions among the respected experts. In terms of the end result, it was certainly very straightforward and transparent: different views and experiences were represented in the jury, but these could not influence each other in a coffee table discussion. Everyone submitted their lists and in the end all the points were summed up.”

The Audience Prize worth 5,000 euros will be presented by art patrons Tiit Pruuli, Jaan Manitski, Riivo Anton, Aivar Berzin and Rain Tamm.

The idea of the exhibition was born in cooperation with Kai Kaljo and the Estonian Painters' Union and it is part of the EAA Spring Exhibition 2020.

Kai Kaljo, the curator of the portrait exhibition, describes the theme of the exhibition as follows: „For many years, it had seemed to me that since the world was already so saturated with objects (including works of art), it would be a sin to produce more. When I started painting a portrait again after a long time, that feeling disappeared. I was thinking that if we can portray a living person (also depicting a likeness, of course), then this portrait could become alive and outlive the person. Teaching at the university, I had a  habit of coming up with fun tasks my students, and this is probably from where the idea for Artists Painting Artists emerged. I am very happy that my idea strikes a chord with so many people.”
