Artworks of the 9th Artishok Biennial Siesta are open and 100 art critical texts published!
Until 20 April, the 9th Artishok Biennial’s artworks can be visited in various public locations in Tallinn. Texts written by ten authors about ten pieces can be found on the biennial’s website.
The in-between, the fact that everything in the booth is as if “the same, but not quite”, makes the ordinary unusual, strange – and thus invites us to notice the unnoticed, the alien, the neglected. Perhaps it also invites us to notice the unnoticed spaces and people in whose world this installation has been placed. The Central Market is one of the few remaining authentic markets (although a reconstruction project is already underway). Despite the fact that the Central Market is a meeting place for very different social classes and types, and even wealthier people go there to purchase various raw materials as a sign of gastronomic awareness, it is also an area for people on the margins, in between. One place where marginalised people are sold in-between goods is at booths like this. The customer might be a pensioner tending their plot in a Soviet-era gardening cooperative. But their decision to come to the Central Market rather than to the garden department of a large shopping centre, where they could get the same things for even less, involves a bit of the art of living. In any case, there is also a recognition, albeit tacit, of the potential for in-betweenness.
