Starting from October 23, Tanel Rander’s solo exhibition "Between a Mountain and a Valley" will be open at Draakoni Gallery in Tallinn. The exhibition is based on a sad and nameless Estonian folk song that has been sung in Rander’s family for several generations. This song is about two rabbits who get killed by a hunter. In Estonia this song is not very widely known, while in Germany it is a famous and happy children’s song "Zwischen Berg und Tiefem Tal". Exactly, happy, because of a faster tempo and an unexpected turn in the end of the song that results with the survival and escape of the rabbits. Even Theodor Adorno has written about the significance of this turn. Knowing our history, it can be assumed that the Estonian song originates from the German one. But for some reason we ended up with a sad song. "Between a Mountain and a Valley" is a journey through contrasting emotional landscapes, from the mountaintop down into a deep valley, in the hope of finding happiness and reconciliation from there. But above all, there is the sea of sadness that is celebrated in this exhibition.
A publication will be part of the exhibition.
