Ivar Kaasik's painting exhibition "Breaking Lights"

05.07.2020

Ivar Kaasik's painting exhibition Breaking Lights in Draakon gallery will be open from Tuesday, July 7th, 2020. The abstract paintings have been completed during the period of 2018-2020. Exhibition design has been completed by Andro Kööp. Exhibition will be open until August 1st.

Light seems to be white or transparent for our eyes. Physically, light is mostly perceived as warmth. In the process of diffraction either on the edge of glass or in the mirror, light becomes rainbow-coloured. In Kaasik's artwork, these diffractions have acquired fixed borders and specific form. Abstraction and hyperrealism can serve the same purpose – to direct the viewer to forgotten roads as well as open them up for new experiences. Minimalistic, simple spots of paint on the canvas remind of reflections of touch on the screen or the diffracted rays on the surface of various matters. With the brush and paint, Kaasik has created dynamics, lines and vibrations that will obtain special meaning only in the eyes of the viewer.

Ivar Kaasik was born in Kuressaare in 1965. He studied in the department of architecture and later in the department of metal art at the Estonian Academy of Arts (former Estonian State Art Institute) in 1983–1992; afterwards he has held various professions, including working as a goldsmith in Germany in 1992–1998. Since 1999, Ivar Kaasik has been a freelance artist and participating in exhibitions since 1988.

Known both as a painter and a jewellery artist, Kaasik has been awarded the prestigious Diamond International Award (1996) in Paris. As a writer, Ivar Kaasik has expressed himself in his book "Beware of Art! What to do. How and how much" („Ettevaatust, kunst! Mida teha. Kuidas ja kui palju“, 2011) where the author disregards pathos and traditional approaches towards art. Kaasik himself has called the genre of his book "a minimum and maximum programme".

Ivar Kaasik will held an artist talk in Draakon gallery on Saturday, July 18th at 12.00. With advance notice it is also possible to visit the artist in his studio on Kreutzwaldi Street, Tallinn. In order to make an appointment, please write to: ivarkaasik [at] gmail.com.
