On June 17, the art exhibition “Life in Decline” opens at the Estonian Mining Museum. For the show, the former administrative building of the Kohtla mine has been intervened to bring forth what goes on in a condition described as in decline. Participating artists: Anna Škodenko, Anne Rudanovski, Darja Popolitova, Edith Karlson, Eléonore de Montesquiou, Jevgeni Zolotko, John Grzinich, Laura Kuusk, Sandra Kosorotova, Varvara & Mar. Exhibition is curated by Francisco Martínez.   The art bus leaves Tallinn on June 17 at 2pm next to Estonian Drama Theatre (Draamateater; Pärnu mnt street, towards Viru hotel).   There will be a curated tour at 6pm (in English) and music will be played by DJ Raul Saaremets.

The registration to the PhD Vitamin consultations and workshop is open!   The second PhD Vitamin of the Estonian Academy of Arts will take place this year on June 15-17 via ZOOM. The event consists of public lectures, consultations and a workshop for drafting a doctoral thesis. The event will once again bring together experts in creative research with those interested in entering doctoral studies in art and design. Anna Škodenko will open her personal exhibition “Stranger at Home” in Draakon gallery at 6pm on Wednesday, June 9th, 2021. The exhibition will be open until July 3rd, 2021.   The artist comments on her current exposition: “You are looking through the large gallery window and make the decision to step inside of a home that is unknown for you – the space of my exhibition.   The phrase “stranger at home” can refer to a stranger in somebody else’s home. It can also mean an alteration in the perception of the external world, transforming close things to something distant. It can allude to a poetic sensation of crossing the borders and facing the unknown. Or it can just happen that at home one feels stranger than in foreign countries.

From June 8 onwards a solo exhibition of Kristel Saan “Paradise – I Already Went And Came Back“ is taking place at the (AV17) gallery in Vilnius.   Kristel Saan is an Estonian artist residing and creating in both Vancouver and Tallinn. She has already presented her works in Finland, Hungary, Denmark, USA, Canada, Germany, and many other countries, while her art pieces are a part of multiple international collections. She has also been working for several years now for the Hollywood movie industry and created sets and artworks for big blockbuster movies. In her process of creation, the artist is paying close attention to corporeal sensations as well as the relationship between the body and its environment. Her means of expression encompasses large-scale installations, photography, video works, ceramics, textile pieces, etc.

The exhibition will remain open until July 18.   The exhibition Letters from a foreign mind has been shaped by both the internal and external changes EKKM has undergone in the past year and a half, as well as contemplating on what is valued in our society and themes like scarcity, neglect and care. What is remembered, what is forgotten and what gets written into art history?   The building of EKKM has seen countless repairs and spatial renovations during its lifetime but is nevertheless tired and slowly crumbling.

Starting from June 10, the group exhibition “Wet Hearts of Everyday Thoughts” will be open in Gallery Mihhail. The exhibition features works by Contemporary Art Master’s students from the Estonian Academy of Arts: Anna Mari Liivrand, Heli Haav, Junny Yeung, Maryliis Teinfeldt-Grins and Sophie Durand. The nomadic apartment gallery Mihhail will be located at Pae Street 57–39, Tallinn, and the exhibition is open by appointment.   The starting point of the exhibition “Wet Hearts of Everyday Thoughts” is, on the one hand, environmentally conscious gratitude for bodies of water as diverse habitats. On the other hand, the initial impulse of the exhibition is the posthumanist understanding of humans as aqueous beings whose life is dependent on water from birth to death.

The Tartu Art Museum is pleased to present the solo exhibition “Verbarium” by the textile artist and designer Krista Leesi. Visitors are greeted by a world of patterns inspired mainly by Tartu but also by Paris and Tallinn.   Krista Leesi’s works are characterised by wordplay that combines language and visuals in a thrilling manner. Her interventions offer new and pointed meanings to familiar objects, images and environments. The exhibition presents new interpretations to the Leaning Building of Barclay de Tolly, where the museum is located, the two-story sheds, or “kallerei”, that are so characteristic of the city, the graffiti covered traffic signs of Tartu and Paris and other elements from urban environments.   The exhibition curator Joanna Hoffmann adds: “I have always admired Krista Leesi’s skills of joining together the historical methods and practices of textile art, different materials and contemporary ideas.

From Saturday, 29 May the exhibition of this year’s Tartu Art Auction will once again be open in the monumental gallery of the Tartu Art House. The auction is organised by the Tartu Artists’ Union in co-operation with the gallery Art & Tonic. Auction takes place on 18 June!   50 works were selected for the exhibition.

The main exhibition of the 8th Tallinn Applied Art triennial “Translucency” will take place at Kai Art Center from May 29th to August 15th, 2021. “Translucency” is an international applied art exhibition, curated by Danish glass artist and art historian Stine Bidstrup. The exhibition includes 21 artists, one quarter of them from Estonia.   Exhibition tour with curator Stine Bidstrup will take place on Saturday, May 29th at 1pm. Please note that the maximum number of participants is 15.   The 2021 Tallinn Applied Art Triennial highlights the creative and critical potential of translucency.

From Saturday, 29 May the joint exhibition “Island of a Thousand Eyes” by Mirjam Hinn and Alar Tuul is open in the large gallery of the Tartu Art House.   Hinn is abstract and dynamic while Tuul is more powerful and brutal, even forthright. The idea of the joint exhibition is based on a fiction that is used to introduce numerous stories and abstract interpretations about our society and subconsciousness. This means that the dialogue of the artists creates a novel and idealistic utopia. The exhibition offers an original glimpse at the post-technological society where ideas about nature and artificial structures have become intertwined. A story of the contemporary society is told using a motif of an abstract island.   The paintings transform under artificial illumination and the exhibition uses lights, colours, space and sounds to play with the senses of the viewer.
